I chose to analyze the music video “Landing in London” by 3
Doors Down. The main theme of the song
is the difficulty of being a musician. Although he gets to travel to all of
these different places, he still finds himself thinking of this unknown person and
wishing he could be with them. Now even
though he doesn’t explicitly say who he misses, it is pretty obvious that he is
thinking of either his girlfriend or his wife. The song sounds sad and almost
depressing as it describes his loneliness.
The video
itself does a great job at complimenting this idea of loneliness. The video
transitions from showing images of a man walking by himself down a railroad
track to the same man sitting by himself on an airplane. By making most of the
scenes cold and snowy, the video makes the lyrics seem more sad and profound.
The lyrics lay the foundation for the song while the music and images act like
a frame and a background.
What I find
most interesting about the video is the fact that they never show the woman
that he misses. This is interesting to me because I think they did that on
purpose. They very easily could have shown at least a few images of the woman
that is always on his mind, but they didn’t. I think they did this in order to
create a personal connection to the song. By not showing the image of the
woman, the audience can easily relate to the idea of missing someone and can
put their own personal experiences in place of her, and to me, that’s what
makes the song great. Everyone can feel a connection to the song because it
gives us the ability to put the words into our own lives.
