This I Believe

The This I Believe speech I read was about a man and his cows.  Now I know it may sound heard to believe but I can actually relate to it. I have never lived on a farm, never owned a cow, and honestly never even seen a cow up close in person, but his speech made sense to me.

Even though his speech is about cows, his speech can be relevant to nearly everyone.  He talks about how his cows “stretch time.” He says that his cows allow him to relax. His cows teach him how to escape the loud and busy world. With his cows he can just sit, without worrying about the problems of the world.

The cows also teach responsibility and hard work. By requiring him to wake up early every morning and staying with them all day, it builds his character and teaches him lessons in responsibility. Even though his arms and legs are tired, he must continue with his job.

I think this speech is a very good basis on teaching how we should operate in the world. Obviously we need to be hard workers in order to succeed in life.  Very few things are given to us. We can’t just go through life expecting everything to be handed to us. Everyday we have to work and improve on ourselves if we want to succeed. By working with his cows everyday, he is building himself up and improving his work habits as he becomes a man.

You must be responsible for yourself and for others. His cows teach him responsibility, because without him, the cows wouldn’t survive.  The cows depend on him to lead them to shelter and provide food. He is responsible to wake up every morning and care for them.  Being responsible is something that everyone needs. We especially need to be responsible for our own actions.

I think the most important lesson that his speech gives us is that sometimes we just need to slow down. The world is a crazy and loud place and it can be very easy to get lost in the noise.  Sometimes we just need to find a quiet place and escape the noise. Sometimes we just need to listen to silence.
